Why does the word “ugly” sound so…well…ugly?
And why are ugly things more often than not described with an “un” attached? For some obvious examples:
Unpleasant. Unappetizing. Unfortunate. Unattractive. Unsightly.
The origin of the word “ugly” apparently comes from the Old Norse for “fear” or “dread.”
But the word “sublime” — associated with achingly beautiful natural landscapes — also is meant to communicate the awe (even fear) awakened by such beauty.
Maybe the correct answer to the attention-craving question “Am I Pretty or Ugly?” is BOTH!
